All projects this page by Alvar Aalto are in Finland and represent a portion of modernist work by Aalto and others visited throughout Europe during 6 month overseas Gap Year Study. Photographs by Stephen Synakowski or as noted. Locations as noted.
A large number of visually very sophisticated but largely overlooked modern villas and houses done by Aalto reside in Southern Finland. To date these are mostly unknown. These are either independently and privately owned and built for friends of Aalto, some of these people in the arts, or they are owned and built by state supported industries, including heavy electrical, timber, paper and forestry products. In the case of the latter, these buildings include residences for senior industry administration and/or senior technical and engineering personnel.
There is, in addition, a large group of casual sylvan residences scattered throughout central and southern parts of the country, very highly finished and reminiscent of early homes of Frank Lloyd Wright, insofar as reflecting a system that is affordable and highly suburban, adaptable and modern.
Finally there is a substantial amount of wood panelized prefab single family and duplex residential throughout the central portion of the country, chiefly located in planned communities near large factories and industrial centers. These panelized housing prototypes are in advance of European prefab models by several decades.
The design and build quality of all of these buildings is extraordinary, so much so they readily present as design models for high level modern residential design today.
All the designs shown this page were visited, with meetings with owners and residents including resident families. Everyone was eager to share stories and enthusiastically explain their homes in great detail. (Should be added that all discussions were in English.) These sessions included a 3 hour meeting with Goren Schildt in Tamassari (Ekenas in Swedisn) (Aalto's foremost architecture critic then teaching in Stockholm), and meetings with factory presidents and senior engineers at Sunila, Kotka (Inkeroinen), Summa, Ahlstrom (not illustrated) Varkhaus (not illustrated).
Meeting in Inkeroin extended over several days with a tour of factories, schools and residential areas. Factories and production facilities themselves also were toured in places nearby, including Summa, Sunila and Kotka, all near the Russian border.
Notably, visits included a day long tour of prefab panelized factory and residential building designs of A. Ahlstrom Co in Varkaus, central eastern Finland. This factory delivers what is called AA prefab system.
Ahlstrom has factories in other locations in Finland. Near Pori in western Finland an Ahlstrom plant delivers a dedicated panelized system named VOK. The VOK design SYSTEM is reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright for its hip roof and square floor plan. This systeem and has been adapted to use for custom singe family residential for senior Ahlstrom administration.

Much farther north is located Villa Aho, an art museum / residence near Rovaniemi, the northernmost city in Finland. It was built for Aarne and Hilda Aho, close friends. This residence was designed as a dedicated art galley with the design directly inspired by the museum design in Aalborg, Denmark.
The Ron Davis Studio, Malibu, CA is shown here to point out the influence Aalto had on Gehry's early design thinking.
All these residential designs can present themselves as potential reference material for conteemporary residential designs and interiors.
Meeting with senior members of the architectural staff at Aalto's office in Munkeniemi, a Helsinki suburb, took place early on in travels. Aalto at the time was at his summer residence Jyvaskyla. The meeting venue was the conference room shown at the top of this page. Discussion centered on study aims and included recommendations by staff regarding key projects and what to visit. The staff was curious as to personal reactions of work seen to date.
